Passport photo size in pixels: common sizes at 300 and 600 DPI
Pixel sizes for commonly used passport-style photo sizes (35 × 45 mm, 2 × 2 in, 33 × 48 mm, 40 × 50 mm) at 300 and 600 DPI, and how to make one.
Check the official rule first
Each passport, visa and ID authority sets its own photo rules, including size, background, head position and file limits, and they change. The sizes below are commonly used print sizes, not the rule for any particular country. Before you apply, read the photo requirements on the official website of the authority you are applying to.
How the pixels are worked out
Pixels = mm ÷ 25.4 × DPI, rounded to the nearest whole pixel. The same physical size gives twice the pixels at 600 DPI as at 300 DPI. Online forms often set a pixel size or a KB limit directly, in which case use those numbers instead.
35 × 45 mm
This is one of the most commonly used passport-style sizes. At 300 DPI it is 413 × 531 px, and at 600 DPI it is 827 × 1063 px. The same size written in centimetres is 3.5 × 4.5 cm.
2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm)
A square size used by some authorities. At 300 DPI it is 600 × 600 px, and at 600 DPI it is 1200 × 1200 px. Because it is square, the crop box in the tool is square too.
33 × 48 mm and 40 × 50 mm
33 × 48 mm is 390 × 567 px at 300 DPI and 780 × 1134 px at 600 DPI. 40 × 50 mm is 472 × 591 px at 300 DPI and 945 × 1181 px at 600 DPI. Use these only if your authority’s instructions name these sizes.
Making the photo
Open /passport-size-photo/, choose mm or inch, and enter the width, height and DPI from your instructions. Turn on the face guide and move the photo so your face sits inside the oval; it is a placement guide only and does not check the photo against any rule. If there is a KB limit, enter it too.
Background
Many authorities ask for a plain white or light background. PhotoSize does not remove the background you were photographed against; it only fills empty edges with white, light blue or light grey. Take the photo in front of a plain light wall, as described in /white-background-photo/.
